When Service Becomes Leadership

When Rahilah joined Omugaso International Sanctuary in 2022, she had no clear vision for her future. She had left school years earlier and had little hope of returning to education or pursuing the dreams she once had.

Four years later, Rahilah describes herself differently: confident, purposeful, growth-oriented and committed to helping other women reach their potential.

Her transformation is particularly visible in the way she serves those around her. That same spirit extends throughout the Sanctuary. She regularly supports her peers with production activities, classwork, assignments and personal challenges. Her patience and willingness to guide others have earned her the trust and appreciation of those around her.

But Rahilah's growth is also evident in something she once found difficult: asking for help.

With encouragement from her mentors and staff, she has learned to reach out when she feels stuck or overwhelmed - whether with her classes, personal wellbeing or, most importantly, her education.

After leaving school many years ago, Rahilah made the courageous decision to return to learning. She began preparing for university entry examinations with support from staff and peers, while also helping Joylyn prepare for the same exams. She shares study materials, explains concepts and makes sure they create time to learn together.

Her long-term dream is to become a clinical social worker and a strong advocate for women and children - a vision that reflects the very values she demonstrates every day.

Today, Rahilah serves as an artisan mentor, a leadership role that represents how far she has come. What began as a woman with little direction has grown into a woman who takes initiative, supports others, seeks guidance, and is actively building the future she once struggled to imagine.

Rahilah's story shows that transformation is not only about what a woman achieves for herself. Sometimes, the clearest sign of growth is what she begins to give to others.
